This nationally recognised course is ideal for educators, childcare workers, and support staff responsible for the wellbeing of children and infants in education and care settings. It is also highly relevant for individuals involved in community groups or sporting organisations that work with young children.
HLTAID012 provides participants with the critical skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively to a range of first aid emergencies involving children, including asthma, anaphylaxis, febrile convulsions, fever, vomiting, and dehydration. The course incorporates the full content of HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid, with an added emphasis on child and infant-specific scenarios and care techniques.
Participants will engage in hands-on practical training with an experienced instructor, preparing them to deliver immediate and confident care in emergency situations until professional medical help arrives.
Approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), HLTAID012 meets the requirements under the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations for first aid, emergency asthma management, and anaphylaxis training.
For those in leadership or compliance roles—such as childcare centre managers or health and safety officers—it is recommended to also consider enrolling in the accredited 22556VIC (Asthma) and 22578VIC (Anaphylaxis) units. These specialist courses provide deeper knowledge in managing medical risks and are particularly valuable for individuals responsible for creating or overseeing health action plans and emergency procedures in education and care environments.
On successful completion, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment with the following unit:
Participants must have basic computer skills and access to a reliable computer with internet and email access.
As an assessment requirement of the HLTAID009 unit, participants must be able to perform at least 2 minutes (5 cycles) of CPR on an adult, child and baby resuscitation manikin that is placed on the floor.
This license lasts for three years with the CPR component needing to be renewed every 12 months.
