Important Information – Licensing Requirements for Close Protection (Bodyguard)

Anyone can enrol in the CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations, however it is important to understand the licensing requirements in Queensland before you can work as a bodyguard:

  • To work in close protection, you must hold a Class 1 Security Provider Licence with a bodyguard endorsement.

  • Completing the CPP31418 course does not automatically grant you a licence. Licensing is issued separately by the Queensland Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

  • Before you can add the bodyguard endorsement to your licence, you must already hold a Class 1 security licence.

If you do not currently have a security licence, you will first need to:

  1. Complete the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations course.

  2. Apply for your Class 1 security licence through the Office of Fair Trading (processing time is usually 4–6 weeks).

    • Licence applicants must be at least 18 years of age, pass a criminal history check, and meet suitability requirements under the Security Providers Act.

Students are permitted to enrol in both the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations and the CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations at the same time. The recommended pathway is to:

  • Complete CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations first.

  • Submit your Class 1 licence application.

  • While waiting for your licence to be processed, begin or continue working on your CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations qualification.
