Workplace safety at heights, and in confined spaces, on a construction site depends on more than a certificate; it depends on workers’ skills and knowledge being genuinely current. In Australia, falls are one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities, and incidents in confined spaces remain among the most preventable. An incident should theoretically never occur if mandatory compliance controls are followed.

For those new to the industry, getting the right tickets before you step on site is not just a legal requirement — it is the foundation of a safe and successful career in construction. Even experienced workers can become complacent. That is why refreshing training every two years is so important.

With WHSQ’s July 2026 inspection campaign underway, now is the time for businesses to review their safety systems, verify worker competency, inspect equipment and ensure training records are current. This guide explains what the campaign actually is, why WorkSafe QLD is running it, how often Working at Heights and Confined Spaces training should be refreshed, and how Australian Training Institute can help workers and employers stay site-ready.

Construction Compliance Campaign – July 2026

Throughout July 2026, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) is conducting a targeted compliance campaign focused on Queensland construction sites. The campaign is designed to improve safety outcomes in construction sites across the state by ensuring businesses are managing high-risk workplace hazards. They are particularly focused on work at heights.

Where significant breaches are identified, inspectors will take action in accordance with Queensland’s work health and safety legislation.

Working at Heights and Confined Spaces Training — How often Do You Need a Refresher?

There were over 7,800 height-related injuries recorded in Australia in 2023–24, and 8 workers also died from fall related incidents between 2020-24. This shows why it is critical that workers in the construction industry must stay aligned with current safety knowledge and legislation. With the WHSQ Campaign set for July, now is the time to review risk management practices and ensure staff are competent, confident, and knowledgable with safety practices in alignment with the codes of practice. A certificate from five years ago does not reflect what is needed today. Skills fade, standards change, and industry recommends regular refresher training every 2 years.

When reviewing your construction site workplace safety skill competencies, it is best to review both working at heights and confined spaces, since they frequently overlap when working on construction sites.

Why Nationally Recognised Training Matters?

Working at Heights, and Confined Spaces are all Nationally Recognised Units of Competency delivered as part of Australia’s Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. Completing one of these courses means you have been formally assessed against a national standard by Australian Training Institute, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) listed on Training.gov.au — and that your confined spaces ticket (or heights ticket) reflects verified competency, not just attendance.

Nationally recognised training provides employers with confidence that workers have demonstrated the practical skills and knowledge required to perform high-risk work safely. These qualifications are recognised across Australia and are widely accepted by employers in construction, mining, manufacturing and infrastructure.

At Australian Training Institute, confined space entry and working at heights courses are delivered as a blended program — online theory at your own pace, followed by a hands-on practical session at our Albion, QLD facility. Classes are capped at six participants, so you receive genuine, supportive feedback from our experienced trainers. Conveniently located in Albion, just 5 kilometres north of the Brisbane CBD, our facility is easily accessible from across the metro area by car or public transport.

Working at Heights Course

ATI’s Working at Heights course is built around the practical, real-world skills inspectors and principal contractors expect to see — not just a certificate. Delivered as a blended program, online theory is completed before attending face-to-face practical training at our Albion, Brisbane facility.

The online component covers the legislative framework governing height safety in Australia, including the harmonised Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011. It also covers the hierarchy of fall prevention and risk assessment. You’ll learn how to correctly select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).

The face-to-face practical is completed on a simulated rooftop, giving participants hands-on experience with harnesses, lanyards, and fall restraint systems under the direct guidance of an experienced trainer.

The online component covers confined space identification, risk assessment, legislative requirements under the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011, and the Queensland Confined Spaces Code of Practice. The face-to-face practical is completed in a simulated confined space environment, with participants working through real-world entry scenarios using appropriate PPE and equipment under direct trainer supervision.
