Who needs this training?

Mining personnel in statutory positions must possess the appropriate skills and knowledge to safely perform their duties. The Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee determine the required competencies for statutory positions at coal mines, mineral mines, and quarries.

The Mining Supervisor (G1, G8, G9) competencies covered in this course are required for:

  • Mine-site supervisors
    • Supervisors on mines employing more than 10 people, whose duties include task allocation
    • Other supervisors as directed by an Inspector of Mines
  • Site Safety and Health Representatives – these competencies are to be obtained within three months of appointment

The RIIRIS402E (G2) competency covered in this course is a statutory requirement for certain occupational categories, including ERZ controllers, Industry Safety and Health Representatives, and other site-specific roles as determined by the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committees. Some sites also require supervisory personnel to hold this competency.

For more information, visit the Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health website.

RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process (G2)

On successful completion, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment with the following units:

  • RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes (G1)
  • RIIWHS301E Conduct safety and health investigations (G8)
  • RIICOM301E Communicate information (G9)
  • RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management processes (G2)

As part of the RIICOM301E unit, students will be required to submit audio/visual recordings demonstrating their ability to conduct a toolbox talk and pre-start meeting using provided scenario information. Therefore, participants must be able to record themselves clearly—both visually and audibly.

To complete this unit, participants must have access to a reliable computer with internet access, email, and Microsoft Word.

Licence & Regulatory Requirements

To maintain competency and comply with legislative requirements, participants are recommended to complete refresher training every five years. This keeps supervisors up to date with safety practices, legislative changes, and risk management processes.

While five years is the industry standard, some mine sites may require more frequent refreshers based on site-specific policies.

Refresher training within this timeframe helps supervisors meet the responsibilities under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999.

Under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 s. 84 (1): the site senior executive must ensure all coal mine workers—including supervisors and certificate holders—receive refresher training at least once every five years under the mine’s training scheme.

Course Price $750.00
