Are you currently a Commissioner for Declarations (CDec) and ready to take the next step in your journey as a valued member of Queensland’s Justice of the Peace network? This one-day upgrade course is specifically designed for individuals who have successfully completed the Commissioner for Declarations course within the last 12 months and are looking to become a Justice of the Peace (Qualified).

As a JP (Qualified), you’ll gain broader responsibilities that support your community and the justice system. JPs perform the same duties as a Commissioner for Declarations, as well as some additional duties. As a JP, you will be able to:

Witness people signing documents as prescribed by law

Certify copies of documents

Issue summons and warrants

Attend police records of interviews

Minor bench duties, such as hearing a bail application, hearing a bail application for children, and make or vary a temporary protection order

This course is available through three delivery methods: self-paced online learning, virtual classroom sessions you can join from home, or in-person training at our Albion campus. Recognition in Other Jurisdictions

Each Australian state and territory has its own legislation, requirements, and application procedures for appointing Justices of the Peace. Although the accredited units in this course are nationally recognised, individuals wishing to become a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) outside of Queensland should consult the official JP appointment authority in their respective state or territory to confirm eligibility and any additional requirements.

NAT11282001 Perform non-bench judicial and minor bench duties

This unit equips you with the knowledge and skills to fulfil the duties of a JP (Qualified), including witnessing and certifying a wide range of legal documents, issuing summonses and warrants, and performing other judicial responsibilities under Queensland law.

To enrol in this course, you must have completed the Commissioner for Declarations (Cdec) course within the last 12 months.

Proof of completion (Statement of Attainment or Certificate) will be required upon enrolment.

Participants must be:

An Australian citizen

18 years of age or older

Of good character

Registered on the state electoral roll.

Who cannot be appointed

You are not eligible to apply or hold office if you:

are an insolvent under administration

have a disqualifying conviction (unless you apply for and are granted an exemption)

have had your appointment as a JP or Cdec revoked within the last 5 years.

The Act defines a disqualifying conviction as a conviction (including a spent conviction) for an offence that:

is indictable (e.g. murder, rape, robbery, assault, and break and enter), including dishonesty offences (e.g. fraud)

involves a breach of confidentiality

is against the Act

results in a prison sentence, even if it is suspended.

Virtual Class / Online Self-Paced Delivery

Participants choosing either the virtual class or the online self-paced option must have a computer with internet access and a valid email address.

The Queensland Government administers all Justice of the Peace applications. All participants are encouraged to visit the following website prior to enrolling to confirm they meet application requirements. Additional application fees do apply. Please note you must apply within 2 years of successfully completing the course. Once your application is submitted, please allow approximately 3 months for approval.

Course Price $240 (GST-free)

The course fee covers all required assessments and learning materials. Students will have access to the current Duties of Justices of the Peace (Qualified) and Commissioners for Declarations Handbook via their student portal. For those enrolled in the face-to-face delivery option, a physical copy of the handbook will also be provided for use during class, in addition to the electronic version.

All students have the option to purchase a personal hard copy of the handbook for an additional fee, as outlined in the Student Handbook.

Note for International Students – we are not CRICOS registered, please check your visa requirements for enrolment.  We cannot accept international students who are on a student visa if your visa specifies that you must study with a CRICOS provider.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Due to industry and/or licensing requirements RPL is not offered for this statement of attainment.

Option 1: 1-day Face-to-Face Classroom

This course is delivered in a supportive classroom environment. Sessions are interactive and hands-on, led by an experienced trainer who is also a practicing Justice of the Peace.

Options 2: Online/Self-Paced with 3 months from the date of enrolment to complete the course.

Support for this online training is done via email with an assessor. You can start your online training as soon as you complete your online enrolment and payment for the course. You will have access to all your learning resources and assessments via your online portal and can complete the course at your own pace, so you have the opportunity to accelerate your learning and finish this course as quickly as you like!

Option 3: 1 Day Virtual Classroom

Attend our 1-day class online via Google Meet from the comfort of your home! This option offers the same comprehensive experience as our in-person class, with the added convenience of remote learning.
