Unique Student Identifier
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your lifelong education number, essential for anyone undertaking nationally recognised training in Australia, including university courses and other vocational education and training (VET) programs. It provides you with an online record of your VET achievements in Australia.
Why Do You Need a USI?
Having a USI is mandatory for all students in Australia. Without it, you cannot receive Commonwealth financial assistance or obtain your qualification or statement of attainment.
How to Create Your USI
Creating your USI is a straightforward process that can be completed online in a few minutes. Here’s how:
- Prepare Your Identification: You’ll need one form of valid ID, such as an Australian passport, non-Australian passport with an Australian visa, Australian birth certificate, Australian driver’s licence, Medicare card, or other accepted forms.
- Visit the USI Website: Go to the USI website and select ‘Create a USI’.
- Agree to Terms and Conditions: Read and accept the terms and conditions to proceed.
- Enter Your Personal Details: Provide your personal information exactly as it appears on your chosen form of ID.
- Confirm Your Identity: The system will verify your details using the Document Verification Service (DVS).
- Set Up Security Details: Create a password and set security questions to protect your account.
- Receive Your USI: Once completed, your USI will be displayed on the screen and sent to you for your records.
International Students
If you’re an international student studying in Australia, you can create a USI after arriving in the country and clearing customs. Use your non-Australian passport and Australian visa as forms of ID during the application process.
Managing Your USI
Your USI stays with you for life, allowing you to access your training records and qualifications anytime. Ensure you keep your USI safe and provide it to each training provider you enrol with. If you forget your USI, you can retrieve it through the USI website using your registered email, mobile number, or by answering security questions.

Finding Your USI
Some students know they have a USI (or at least know they’ve done training since 2015) but don’t know what their USI is
