Turn Your Experience into a Nationally Recognised Qualification

You may already have the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to achieve a
formal qualification — now it’s time to have that recognised.

Introduction to RPL – What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

At Australian Training Institute, we understand that learning happens in many different ways.

Through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, we assess the skills and knowledge you have gained through work, previous study, self-employment, and life experience to determine whether they meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

For eligible applicants, RPL can provide a more efficient pathway to formal recognition without repeating unnecessary training.

FAQs & Contact Information

How long does the RPL process take?

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process can take a few weeks to a few months. The exact time depends on how quickly you submit your evidence, how quickly previous employers / RTOs can verify evidence provided, and if there is any additional gap training required due to not enough evidence supplied.

What kind of evidence do I need to provide?

You need to show proof of your existing skills and knowledge. Evidence to help show this can vary dependant on the qualification / industry regulations, below are some examples you may be asked for:

  • Work Documents – Job descriptions, resumes, references from employers, work reports, or performance reviews.
  • Certificates & Training – Any qualifications, certificates, or short courses you have completed.
  • Work Samples – Photos, videos, reports, or projects you have worked on.
  • Payslips & Employment Records – To show proof of work experience.
  • Letters of Recommendation – From supervisors, clients, or colleagues confirming your skills.
  • Portfolios – A collection of your best work showcasing your experience.
Can I apply for RPL if I’m currently employed?

Yes! Your employment status does not impact whether you can apply for RPL or not, as long as you are you able to show recent experience within at least 2-5 years you may be eligible for an RPL assessment.

Do I need to attend classes?

No, you don’t have to attend classes for RPL. RPL is an assessment process, instead of learning in a classroom, you prove that you already have the skills and knowledge required by submitting supportive documented evidence. You may however require to do gap training if the assessor identifies any gaps with the evidence you have provided and the assessment criteria against the unit of competency being assessed.
