This course provides individuals with general and specialist skills to operate effectively in a broad range of transport security screening roles. All new screening officers in the aviation sectors will be required to hold the AVI20118 Certificate II Transport Security Protection.
This qualification includes the units of competency required by Transport Security Screening Officers to perform transport security screening functions including security sensitive areas, undertaking physical searches, and identifying and handling weapons, explosives and prohibited items. A Transport Security Screening Officer must also apply effective communication skills to work in a broad range of transport security protection roles.
This International Airport Screening Officer course also includes all the qualification and unit requirements for Domestic Airport Screening Officer and Maritime Screening Officer. This qualification will allow you to work at places like airports, port facilities, courthouses, cruise ship terminals and largescale screening facilities.
If you only require this qualification for a job as an Air Cargo Examination Officer – enrol in our AVI20118 – Certificate II in Transport Security Protection (Air Cargo Examination Officer) course. Alternatively, if you would also like to be awarded a Cargo Screening Officer qualification, you can elect complete one extra unit for a cost of $200. Please advise us at the time of enrolment if you would like to complete this unit.
On successful completion, participants will be issued a Qualification with the following units:

For full information about the ASIC/MSIC process—including which card type you require, issuing bodies, eligibility criteria, reasons your application may be refused, and available review options—please visit:

Individuals undertaking this qualification must have passed a valid background check before accessing security‑restricted learning resources associated with AVIG0001 Work effectively in a transport security environment. Students who apply but do not pass their background check will not be able to attend the classroom component. In this case, a refund will be issued minus a 10% administration fee.
If your ASIC/MSIC application is refused due to an adverse criminal record, you (or your employer/agent, or issuing body) may request a discretionary review by the Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs at no additional cost.
Applications must be lodged through an authorised issuing body for ASIC or MSIC cards. Some employers act as issuing bodies or have established relationships with one. While some issuing bodies may process applications in 2–3 weeks, we strongly recommend applying at least 6 weeks in advance, as background checks are performed by AusCheck and government agencies, and processing times can vary and are outside the control of the Australian Training Institute.
